So, we have this conversation between these two friends, uh, Jake and Anna.
Okay.
And, uh, it's just chalk full of slang. So, we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to just go through

and kind of dissect and analyze some of these .
Fun.
So, uh, I guess without further ado, why don't we jump right into it?
Sounds good.
So, the conversation starts with Jake saying, "Hey, Anna, long time. No. See, what's up?
So, what's up? I mean, everybody knows what what's up means, right?
But it's, you know, it's it's almost never used as a genuine question. Like, they don't actually expect the person to give you a rundown of like their entire life.
It's more of a greeting.
It's a greeting. Yeah. Like, how are you doing?
Exactly.
But even shorter, quicker.
Yeah.
But then Anna responds, "Hey, Jake.
Not much. Just chilling."
Right. So, chilling is interesting because I think it does go a little bit beyond just like relaxing. You know, I think it implies like a kind of a vibe.
A vibe. Yeah.
Yeah.
Like a laid-back.
Yeah.
Effortless,
mellow.
Exactly. So, and that's, you know, I think that's
it's a state of mind almost.
It is a state of mind.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Cool. Uh, so a little later in the conversation, Jake says, "Uh, I'm swamped with work this week."
Swamped. Now, that one I feel like is very evocative.
It is. Yeah.
You can just picture like
like drowning in work.
Exactly. Yeah. Yeah. Like you're just you're just weighed down by all this stuff that you have to do.
Totally.
And I think, you know, it it really speaks to, I think, like the modern
modern workplace.
Workplace. Yeah. Where everyone's just like constantly, you know, expected to do more and more and more.
Always on.
Yeah.
Yeah. So,
and then he follows that up by saying, "I can't wait to have some downtime this weekend, though."
So, downtime is is like the opposite of that, you know? It's like you're you're finally like free from all of that, you know, all those burdens, all those responsibilities. charge.
Yeah, exactly.
Yep.
Take a break.
So then Anna says, "Work has been a real grind lately."
Grind. Now that's an interesting one because
you know it it's one of those words that has like a double meaning. Yes. So on the one hand, you know, you can use it to describe something that's like tedious or difficult. Yeah.
But it can also have this kind of like positive connotation of like working hard, dedication.
Yeah. And being dedicated and, you know, putting in the effort.
Yeah.
So it's it's It's like you're you're taking pride in struggle in a way.
Yeah. It's like the romanticization of the hustle.
Exactly.
Yeah. So, a little later and follows that up by saying, "But hey, we got to hustle, right?"
So, I think hustle has even more of that like active connotation.
Okay.
Like you're you're really out there like making things happen,
you know? It's it's not just like ively working hard. It's like
you're going after it.
Yeah. You're going after it. You're you're taking risks. You're pursuing opportunities.
Yeah.
So, yeah, there's There's definitely a difference.
So, it's like grind is the fuel and then hustle is the engine.
Ooh, I like that.
Yeah.
Yeah,
that's a good analogy.
So, moving on. Uh Jake says, "No way. That's sick. Good for him."
So, obviously, he's not talking about like someone being ill,
right?
Uh sick in this context means like cool or awesome or impressive,
right?
So, it's, you know, it's another one of those words that's like kind of the opposite.
You're totally opposite
what it literally means.
Yeah. So, then he follows that up by saying, "I'm so Stoked for him.
Oh, stoked. That's a good one.
Yeah.
That's just like pure enthusiasm.
Yeah. Pure excitement.
Yeah. Like you're just like you can't wait.
Yeah.
For something.
Totally.
Yeah.
Uh so then Jake says he's been working so hard. It's great that he's finally catching a break.
I feel like catching a break is fairly self-explanatory.
Yeah, I think that one's pretty straightforward.
Yeah.
It just means like you're finally getting some good fortune
or some relief.
Yeah. Like the universe is giving you a little bit of a
Exactly. .
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
So, uh, a little later, Jake says, "We should hit up that new spot downtown sometime."
So, hit up in this case just means like to visit or to go to, right? It's just like a more informal,
more casual.
Yeah. Casual way of saying that.
Okay. And Anna responds with or it's lit.
Lit. Lit. So, lit is another one of those words that like
it's so visually
it is very visual. Yeah. And it basically just means like it's really cool.
Exciting.
Yeah. Exciting. Like
high energy. Yeah, exactly. Like
there's a lot going on.
It's the place to be.
Yeah. Exactly.
Yeah.
Okay. So then Jake says bet.
Bet. So this is not like you're making a wager, right?
It's more like you're agreeing or affirming
like Okay.
Yeah. Exactly. Like it sounds good.
You got it.
You got it.
Yeah. Yeah.
And then finally they wrap up the conversation with
all right. I got to bounce. Catch you later.
Yeah. So bounce just means to leave,
right?
Catch you later is just like a casual way of saying by Right.
Yeah. It's pretty interesting. I mean, when you look at all this slang together, it just it just adds so much color
Yeah.
to the language.
It does. And, you know, and it it it really does, I think, reflect like
like the culture.
The culture. Yeah. Like what people are thinking about what's important to them.
Yeah. And I think it, you know, for people who are trying to learn English or who are just, you know,
wanting to understand like modern English,
Yeah.
slang is so important.
It it is because it's it's how people actually talk,
you know, in real life. And so,
you know, if you can understand the slang,
then you can understand like
the culture better,
right? It's not just about like,
you know, sounding cool, right?
It's about understanding
Exactly.
like the nuances.
Yeah. So, it's it's really fascinating stuff. And, you know, it makes you wonder how is all of this like evolving language affecting, you know, the way we see each other and, you know, the way we interact with each other. in different social situations.
Yeah, absolutely. That's a great point.
